Wonderful Group is pleased to announce a significant milestone for its subsidiary, Zambia Mupika Sericulture Company, following the dispatch of the first export shipment of heat processed silkworm cocoons from Mpika, Muchinga Province, to the Chinese market.

 

The approximately 𝟵 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲 shipment represents an important step in the development of Zambia’s emerging sericulture industry and demonstrates the potential for new agricultural value chains to connect rural production in Zambia with international markets.

 

Zambia Mupika Sericulture Company has developed approximately 𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗵𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱𝘀 in the Mpika area and currently has an annual output of approximately 𝟯𝟬 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗻𝘀.

 

For Wonderful Group, the milestone represents more than the movement of a new product across borders. It reflects the Group’s broader commitment to investing in productive sectors that can support agricultural diversification, employment, local value addition and Zambia’s participation in international trade.

 

The development comes at an important time for trade relations between Zambia and China. The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Zambia recently highlighted the emergence of sericulture in Zambia as a new opportunity for agricultural diversification, employment, exports and foreign exchange generation.

 

Zambia has enjoyed zero tariff treatment on 100 percent of tariff lines into the Chinese market since December 2024. According to figures shared by the Chinese Embassy, bilateral trade between Zambia and China reached US$7.6 billion in 2025, with Zambian exports to China accounting for US$5.7 billion. In the first quarter of 2026, Zambian exports to China reached US$1.9 billion, representing year on year growth of 76 percent.

 

The protocol facilitating the export of heat processed cocoons to China was signed during Chinese Premier Li Qiang’s visit to Zambia in 2025, helping pave the way for the product to access the Chinese market.

 

Wonderful Group recognises the important role played by the Governments of Zambia and China in creating the enabling environment and market access that has made this milestone possible.

 

Through Mupika Sericulture, the Group’s focus is now on building a sustainable value chain around sericulture, strengthening production capacity and creating opportunities for communities and farmers to participate in an emerging agricultural industry.
